The best live service title ever? Developers formulate big goals

In a detailed statement, studio CEO Johan Pilestedt discussed the further development of the co-op shooter “Helldivers 2”. According to Pilestedt, Arrowhead's goal is nothing less than to bring us the best live service title ever.

This week the developers at Arrowhead gave us a quick look behind the scenes of the successful co-op shooter “Helldivers 2”. This involved both publishing new content and fixing errors.

Like Arrowhead admitted, the studio has to find the right balance here, as the workforce has not grown despite its success. In addition to these statements, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt spoke about the developers' long-term plans. According to Pilestedt, his team is concerned with delivering the best possible gaming experience with “Helldivers 2” in the long term.

Since Arrowhead is an independent studio, those responsible must make strategically wise use of the limited resources.

Studio CEO talks about the demands of the developers

“Let me add some context. “Arrowhead is independently owned by people who work at the studio and is not influenced by shareholders in the traditional sense,” said the CEO of the “Helldivers 2” creators. “Of course we have a great partnership with Sony where we agree on the goals to be achieved etc. But there is no mandatory function or requirement here per se.”

“We want to deliver the best in the industry, and we calibrate our efforts to fix bugs versus add new content. It's easy to say to just fix bugs and not add anything. But the reality of competition in this industry is that we have to do both to stay relevant.”

Pilestedt added: “The demands and expectations of the studio are high. All eyes are on us and we have one goal: to make this the best live game you've ever played. We just have to find our rhythm and balance.”

Arrowhead on working with Sony

In another statement, Pilestedt discussed the collaboration with PlayStation and emphasized the trust that his studio enjoys. The CEO of Arrowhead continued: “Please don’t take this as a defensive statement. I know we can do better as a studio. My intention was just to say that the gaming industry is a complicated beast.”

“We need to stay relevant and keep everyone entertained while we troubleshoot. The expectations of our friends at PlayStation are pretty simple: 'Make a great game for players. We trust you,'” it concludes.

“Helldivers 2” was released in February 2024 for the PC and PS5. In order to keep the co-op shooter interesting in the long term, Arrowhead would like to regularly release updates and new content. In addition to the war bonds, we can also look forward to one or two surprises in the next few months.

This week Arrowhead pointed out that we are using the information from dataminers the necessary caution should enjoy, as the co-op shooter's data also contains old content that was not followed up on during development.
