Tango Gameworks: Legend breaks her silence

Until now, it was unclear why Shinji Mikami decided to leave the studio he founded, Tango Gameworks. In an interview, the creative mind behind series like “Resident Evil” or “The Evil Within” provided clarity.

As is well known, Shinji Mikami decided to open the studio Tange Gameworks, which he founded in 2010, in February of last year to leave.

The two “The Evil Within” adventures were among the most famous and successful titles for which Mikami was largely responsible. After it was previously unclear why Mikami decided to leave Tango Gameworks, the 58-year-old Japanese finally provided clarity in a recent interview.

Even though there were no internal disagreements or disputes with other managers, Mikami said he had been thinking about his departure for a long time. More precisely, over eight years.

Mikami felt responsible for the studio

But why did it take several years until his decision was final? In this regard, Mikami explained that he simply felt responsible for the studio he founded, the teams and its projects. According to Mikami, when he founded Tango Gameworks, he aimed to bring a breath of fresh air to the Japanese developer landscape.

The well-known designer wanted to offer young game developers more regular experiences by developing games with shorter development cycles. At the same time, smaller titles should be developed that inspire players with innovative ideas and stand out from the mainstream.

Regarding the reasons that led to his departure, Mikami added that he simply needed a break from survival horror experiences like “The Evil Within” and wanted to devote himself to other projects.

We shouldn't overestimate his role at Tango Gameworks, says Mikami

Mikami then noted that we shouldn't overstate his role or position at Tango Gameworks. Even though Mikami founded the Japanese studio in 2010, he only ran it for six months. “I only held the position of CEO for six months,” confirmed Mikami.

“I think a lot of people were under the impression that I was the representative. But I was very close to an ordinary employee. The position of producer was attached to my name. But I wasn’t an executive or anything.”

Last month we received the announcement that Mikami would remain loyal to the video game industry and founded a new development studio, Kamuy Inc. The well-known designer left it open what Kamuy will work on in the future.

Given the reasons that led to his departure from Tango Gameworks, we can at least assume that Kamuy's first project will not be a horror or survival horror title.

Let's wait for more details from the official side.
