Suicide Squad Falls Short of Marvel’s Avengers, Signals Trouble Ahead

Three months after its launch, Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is still in bad shape and has just achieved a record which is anything but encouraging for the future.

The aftermath of Batman Arkham is currently gloomy for Rocksteady Studios. Their service game Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League was in trouble upon its release, and even before in fact. The multiplayer orientation of the title was never well received, and opinions on the final version only confirmed doubts and fears. Warner Bros. Discovery was quick to react by expressing its disappointment. For the group, the title was not “met expectations” and anticipated a “complicated year” for their gaming department. But the descent into hell unfortunately continues for Rocksteady.

Suicide Squad cast by Marvel's Avengers

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League has been available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC since January 30, 2024. And a few days after its launch, the first attendance figures were already worrying. Despite the reputation of Rocksteady Studios and the aura around DC characters, the game brought together half as many players as Marvel's Avengers simultaneously. A production which experienced more or less the same things and which was buried by its developers. The Crystal Dynamics title has indeed encountered strong criticism, with the added bonus of disappointing sales for the publisher Square Enix. But still probably much higher than those of Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League ultimately.

In terms of player attendance, Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is also still enjoying success. For a period, the game was down to 118 players simultaneously. Which is less than Marvel's Avengers at the same time. So of course, it wasn't nirvana with 123 players either, but Suicide Squad has only just been released. The title even dropped to 105 players on this day of April 26, 2024. Compared to the 51,044 players of Helldivers 2 currently, it hurts and it is above all very problematic for the future.

Why would Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros Discovery continue to invest time and resources if it still doesn't work? For now, the teams are maintaining their roadmap, but it might not last. According to rumors, Suicide Squad could be abandoned sooner than expected. A final season would be deployed in January 2025 and after that, curtains! In any case, we hope that Rocksteady will be able to bounce back and that the developers will not have to suffer a closure.
