In Sea of Thieves, PvP is enabled by default

Since its release, the main game mode of Sea of Thieves has not changed significantly in its overall principle. You set out to attack the world, in the company of other crews. The latter could then be friendly or on the contrary hostile depending on the playing style of the players.

Except that in December 2023, an update came to change that. Indeed, this way of playing still exists, but it was renamed to “High Seas” mode. A new mode, “Calm Seas” has been added and it allows you to avoid encountering other players.

Concretely only you and a maximum of three crew members are on the game map. It is therefore impossible, for example, to explore the islands with two boats. The downside is that as there are no other players on the map, there is no risk of PvP.

It is then logical, but you will not be able to advance the entire PvP part of the game in this Calm Seas mode since there will be no other boats to attack. But beyond that, you will have the same things to do as in High Seas mode.

What's in “Calm Seas” mode?

In fact, you will be able to do the entire exploration and PvE part of the game normally. Even the fables will be present and for this particular case, many players are happy. Indeed, constantly being interrupted in the middle of a story by PvP could sometimes be annoying.

As we told you before, the Reaper's Bone alliance will not be available, as will the Hourglass of Destiny or the competitive Careen of the Evil Siren's Song. It's pretty logical all this revolving around cooperation and PvP mechanics.

But the big change in this Calm Seas mode will lie in the gains you will have. Indeed, Sea of Thieves has decided to balance this according to the risks which are still much lower. The treasures you collect have little chance of not arriving safely in this game mode.

From then on, you will only gain 30% of the gold and reputation you would normally have earned in High Seas mode. In addition, the reputation level of the merchant alliance is capped at level 40 so that to obtain the title of Legendary Pirate, you will necessarily have to venture onto the High Seas.

Finally, the last important point is that of the progression of the season battle pass. In order for the latter to remain coherent, it was decided that seasonal fame gains are exactly the same in both game modes.
