Super Nintendo enthusiasts have decided to recreate a rather special television model: the cartridges can be inserted directly into the television in order to be read directly… without the console next to it!. Thus, it is capable of reading said cartridge, displaying the image, producing sound and you just need to connect a controller to play. Faced with this curiosity, enthusiasts decided to reproduce this model to make a smaller, lighter version. But to get there, it's not as simple as connecting the console to a screen…

The SF-1 SNES TV, a console television

Coming back to the basic project, this is SF-1 SNES TV created by Sharp, more commonly called “Super Famicom Naizou”. Released on December 5, 1990 in Japan, it was a television capable of reading Super Famicom cartridges thanks to a port at the top of the screen. At the time, this television was available in two sizes: the first was 21 inches, or more than 50 centimeters, while the second model was 14 inches, equivalent to 35cm. This is still quite substantial even for a “small” model.

So, to push the concept even further, a group of enthusiasts decided to go further by reducing the size of the device even further. The initiative is inspired by the so-called “Mini” consoles which appeared on the market a few years ago such as the NES Mini or the Super Nes Mini. So, the goal of this “Super Nintendo SF1 TV Mini” is that it is only 9 inches, or a little less than 23 cm.

A passion project

So it's on the YouTube channel of Gangeek Style that Ivankaiser presented the project. First, he explains that it was only after a lot of research that the team of five people embarked on this challenge. Their goal ? Create the possibility of playing Super NES games anywhere, all the time, and without disturbing those around you. However, the design of the Super Nintendo SF1 TV Mini project encountered several difficulties. The acquisition of the equipment, obviously, but also the compatibility between the different integrated elements.

We must not forget that the Super Famicom Naizou is no longer very young, so our current resources were of great help in making this project a reality. But one of the most complex parts was to fit all the modifications into this small 9 inch screen. As Ivankaiser says so well in the video:

For this project you will need a Super Famicom junior, an iPad screen, speakers, […] and above all patience.

Equipped with their 3D printer and their hands, the five enthusiasts never gave up. The technical difficulties multiplied, but everyone was able to contribute their part to the building, or rather, their component to the machine. This is now operationalthanks to Delta Island for their work and thank you to the channel Gangeek Style for sharing this superb project! The channel ends by specifying that the project is not for sale, but that the prints and extensions can be sold as a basic kit.
