»This will be our best work yet«: Larian boss Swen Vincke dares to use big words to describe the future of the development studio behind Baldur's Gate 3. In this particular case, many fans may be inclined to express a certain amount of advance trust, after all, the studio's last two role-playing games were groundbreaking for the genre.

It's still completely unclear what kind of game Larian will tackle next. The bad news: It definitely won't be Baldur's Gate 4. The good news: There are even two projects in the pipeline!

What Larian plans to do in the future

The developers of the best role-playing game of all time (and the also excellent Divinity: Original Sin 2) definitely want to continue with other games after clearly rejecting another D&D game. Publishing Director Michael Douse made it clear on X (formerly Twitter) that after winning the BAFTA five times, they were ready to move on:

In one Steam update Larian announced that they wanted to concentrate on their own brands in the future. There are currently two unnamed projects in the works, both in an early phase. CEO Swen Vincke added:

I don't know if we'll succeed [Baldur’s Gate 3 zu übertreffen], but when I look at our narrative, visual and gameplay plans, I think we're doing our best work yet. I'm as excited as a child when I look at the pictures, wanting to show everyone right now and grumbling in frustration because I have to wait for everything to actually work. Yes, it's hype, but it's hype because it looks and feels really good.

What could the next games be? A new Divinity: Original Sin would of course be obvious, after all Larian probably still has a lot of stories ready for her own fantasy world of Rivellon. But maybe it will also be something completely new – it would also be conceivable that they would venture into strategy again, now that they have developed many role-playing games.

In any case, it is already clear to Larian that their next game should start with the proven early access model, like Baldur's Gate 3.

In any case, we will have to be patient (i.e. several years) before the Belgian studio takes a chance. Baldur's Gate 4 is to be developed by another studio, and Hasbro says it is currently looking for the right partners for it. You can find out more in the articles linked above!
