The Penguin: Colin Farrell announces the color of the series!

The Penguin is a spin-off planned for the end of 2024, from the movie The Batman by Matt Reaves, released in 2022. The film about the masked hero was a resounding success with $770 million at the worldwide box office. The public appreciated the very dark and trashy universe of Gotham City proposed by the director. In the series The Penguin, viewers will have the opportunity to revisit the dangerous world of crime. This sequel takes place just after the events of The Batman, which ends with the death of Carmine Falcone, ex-mafia godfather. In the underworld of Gotham, a person is determined to seize his chance to reach the heights of the underworld. This man is Oswald Chesterfield known as the “Penguin”, played by Colin Farrell.

The “Penguin” is a super villain inspired by the DC Comics universe known to be one of the best opponents of the protector of Gotham City. In the movie The Batman, Colin Farrell plays a gothic and cruel character characterized by his hands made up of three webbed fingers. The Hollywood actor confirmed that the “Penguin” would keep the same character trait for the series, which will be composed of 8 episodes. In an interview with HeyUGuys, the actor announced what fans should expect from this series: “A ton of violence, extreme darkness and a character… a man who is doing everything to take the place that was vacated at the end of The Batman film, with the death of Carmine Falcone.[…] I didn't expect it to be so violent. If this had been released in theaters, it would have been Rated R unaccompanied under 17s, editor's note”. For comparison, The Batman is classified PEGI-13.

DC: Starting again on clear and solid foundations

With the success of The BatmanDC gave itself another chance to seduce the public. Series The Penguin should be able to allow them to continue on this path. However, it was not a foregone conclusion for the Warner Bros. subsidiary. The era of Zack Snyder who directed Man of Steel in 2013 and Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 received mixed reviews and did not have the expected success. Fans criticize DC for having stories that are too complicated to understand and a lack of humor in the films.

However with the success of Matt Reaves' film, American society shows that it is capable of modernizing its heroes such as Batman and the Joker. The two films should serve as launching pads to allow DC to start again on solid and coherent foundations. In addition, DC can count on Matt Reaves who has visited the sets of all the series currently in production as a supervisor, including The Penguin. The audience and critics will confirm or not the revival of Detective Comics in the cinema and on the small screen!
