New Anime Adaptation Announced for Another Series by the Creator of Chainsaw Man, Fans Are Ecstatic

Chainsaw Man was undoubtedly one of the phenomena of the 2022 fall season. Produced by MAPPA studios, the anime has won over fans of japanimation who will be delighted to learn that another manga from its author will be adapted not into a series, but into a film.

The animated film Look Back from the author of Chainsaw Man

Creating the domain name lookback-anime.com left little doubt as to the existence of a project to adapt the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Look Back (ルックバック from its original title) is a one-shot (publication ending in a single volume) published on the Shonen Jump+ platform from Shueisha publishing in 2021, three years after Chainsaw Man’s debut in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

Look Back tells the story of two primary school students, one admired by her classmates for her drawing skills and the other holed up in her room but just as talented, who end up meeting, then sharing the manga section of the newspaper of their school. It’s now official, the manga will be adapted into an animated film by Studio Durian, which previously worked on Gift (2021) and Attack Zero x Evangelion (2020). Look Back will be released in Japanese cinemas on June 28, 2024. No release date has yet been communicated for French territory. The first teaser (see above) which was recently posted online captures the essence of the One Shot by faithfully repeating the cover of the original manga.

The sequel to Chainsaw Man at the cinema

Season 1 of Chainsaw Man was followed by millions of spectators around the world, either directly on the Japanese channel TNX (TV Tokyo) or on the simulcast platform (for simultaneous broadcast) Crunchyroll which obtained exclusivity. Produced by MAPPA studios (Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, Hell’s Paradise, Bucchigiri!), the anime received an excellent reception from the “japanimation” community. Its score of 8.52/10 on MyAnimeList can attest to this. It is as of today (February 14, 2024) the 120th best anime of all time.

During Jump Festa ’24 organized on December 17, 2023, the sequel to Chainsaw Man was made official. In order to capitalize on the fame of manga and anime, MAPPA made the decision to produce not a season 2, but an animated film in order to cover the next arc of the work imagined by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The film Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will be released in cinemas on a date not yet announced. In the meantime, you can (re)watch the first 12 episodes on Crunchyrool.
