Motorola Gambling on Storage and AI Against Giants Samsung and Apple

The new Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, Edge 50 Pro and Edge 50 Fusion offer premium features at lower prices than the competition. With this rather generous proposition, Motorola hopes to attract new customers, particularly those who take a lot of photos and videos.

999 euros is the price of the new one Motorola Edge 50 Ultra. It can be scary at first glance, but it is justified by a single characteristic: 1 TB of storage. In comparison, with the same capacity, Apple sells its iPhone 15 Pro Max for 1,979 euros and Samsung offers its Galaxy S24 Ultra for 1,829 euros. Never has a smartphone with such a large capacity cost “so inexpensively”.

For 699 euros, an even more aggressive price, Motorola is also launching the Edge 50 Pro, a high-end smartphone with 512 GB of storage (1,729 euros at Apple). The strategy of the Chinese-American brand seems to be betting everything on this aspect to convince people annoyed by saturated memory to stop by.

Storage and AI: a good recipe in 2024?

Usually, smartphone brands offer their devices in several versions. By simplifying its range as much as possible, Motorola solves a logistical problem on the one hand (fewer devices to manage), while making a strong bet with consumers. At a time when too little storage is posing more and more problems, the brand hopes that its bet will allow it to steal market share from the duopoly. In store, a customer who has the choice between a device with 512 GB and another with 128 GB, sometimes at the same price, could be tempted by Motorola's proposal.

At 699 euros, the Edge 50 Pro will be the star of Motorola, which plans to launch it at several resellers (including Fnac Darty). With its high-end design and rather well-positioned features, it could be one of the surprises of spring.

And artificial intelligence in all this? Like Samsung and Google (and while waiting for Apple), Motorola is banking on generative functions to make its products sexier. Among them :

  • The same Google Photos as on the Pixel, with the Magic Editor, the magic eraser and several functions.
  • Sync your style: a function that allows you to generate a wallpaper from a photo of your clothes.
  • Reinforced digital stabilization in video, as well as optimization of image quality.
  • A focus capable of following a person, thanks to a detection algorithm.

In addition to these two high-end products, Motorola plans to offer the Edge 50 Fusion, a smartphone that focuses on its finesse and its lower price of 399 euros. Enough to make it ever more competitive in a smartphone market which is gradually tightening around a smaller number of players.
