Mixed Reactions to Controversial Open-World Shooter Suicide Squad Upon Release

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League caused a lot of controversy before its release – after its release, the open-world shooter now looks quite disappointing.

Almost eight years after the release of Arkham Knight, Studio Rocksteady released the long-awaited successor with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – but even though the game takes place in the same world as the acclaimed Batman Arkham trilogy, there is no sign of a similarly positive reaction. While the rating on Metacritic is mixed, the number of players at the launch of the live service shooter is also disappointing.

Suicide Squad: Taskforce X, that was nothing

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice has had a turbulent development with several postponements and, according to many reviews, the open-world shooter has many problems. After many gaming publications from publisher Warner Bros. did not receive a test version before the launch, a bitter picture emerges after its publication on Metacritic: critics give the game a thumbs up just a rating of 59 on the PS5, while it fares even worse among gamers with a 3.8 out of 10. Especially the lack of variety in the game missions is criticized by many viewers as boring and sluggish. In addition, the game's live service concept also attracts disfavor, while the boss fights against the Justice League cannot convince everyone. At least most critics describe the plot and the work of the voice actors as extremely positive – but unfortunately this is not enough given the gameplay weaknesses.

Even in our test, Suicide Squad is not completely convincing:

New open-world shooter: player numbers suggest evil

The disappointing reactions also continue in the number of players – on the first day after the release Suicide Squad now has 13,459 concurrent Steam players. The flopped superhero game Marvel's Avengers, on the other hand, had over 29,000 simultaneous players at launch. For a live service project like Suicide Squad that aims to retain gamers over a longer period of time, this is a pretty weak start that doesn't bode well for the future. (Source: VGC)
