Meta to launch limited edition VR headset “inspired by Xbox” | Xbox

Although Xbox offers the possibility of using Xbox Cloud Gaming with Meta Quest headsets, the brand has never fully launched into virtual reality, for example by offering its own peripheral, like Sony with its PlayStation VR2. However, it seems that Xbox is increasingly interested in this technology, as evidenced by the arrival of a Meta headset inspired by the green brand.

Meta will offer a limited edition of a VR headset inspired by Xbox

Meta has just announced some new features regarding its activities in the field of virtual reality in order to offer developers and users a more open ecosystem. Concretely, this will for example result in the arrival of a “brand new high-performance gaming headset” by ASUS ROG, or even a headset optimized for productivity and entertainment.

Even more surprising, a limited-edition “Xbox-inspired” Meta Quest headset will soon be roaming the daylights. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, even suggested that the headset could be offered with an Xbox controller and an Xbox Game Pass subscription.

The shared image is only conceptual, but it will be particularly interesting to see what Meta and Xbox come up with. Obviously, many of us would like Xbox game licenses to be used for virtual reality productions, although that clearly does not seem to be the direction mentioned by Meta.

You will surely have to show a lot of patience before seeing this headset arrive on the market.

Xbox has always been shy with VR

As recently as June 2023, Matt Booty, president of content and game studios at Xbox, declared that virtual reality was still only a niche and that it was necessary to wait before investing in it.

I think for us it's just a matter of waiting for the audience to be there. We are fortunate to have these great intellectual properties that have become ongoing franchises with great communities. We have 10 games that have surpassed 10 million players to date, which is a great achievement, but that's the kind of scale we need to see the success of a game and it's not still very much the case with VR and AR.

Despite everything, the brand seems to want to attack this market, without directly launching with its own helmet. It remains to be seen whether in the years to come, Xbox will finally change its tune and help the technology become more democratic thanks to strong Xbox licenses.
