But much more important: There was not only atmospheric fanfare, but also solid information and first impressions of the game about the sequel Kingdom Come – Deliverance (in the test). Even before the official broadcast, Warhorse Studios invited us to an event and shared all the information about the medieval role-playing game, which is scheduled to be released for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S|X at the end of 2024.

On these pages you will find everything that has currently been announced about the ambitious sequel. We took the opportunity to ask the team a few questions about Kingdom Come – Deliverance 2.

Once again you will slip into the shoes of Heinrich, who now serves as a squire for his friend Hans Capon.

Heinrich, Hans and the fate of Bohemia

Spoke for the Warhorse team Tobias Stolz-ZwillingGlobal PR Manager.

We remember: The first Kingdom Come – Deliverance placed you in the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1403. You took on the role of Heinrich, the son of a blacksmith. In the first hour of the game you help the father to make a masterful sword for the feudal lord, but Heinrich's home village of Skalitz is soon wiped off the map by Cuman troops led by the cruel Markwart von Aulitz. Many residents die, including Heinrich's parents. When he returns later, to make matters worse, robbers steal his special sword. There were a few twists and turns up until the end credits, but at this point I can only say that there was a cliffhanger at the end. The hunt for the sword and the quest for revenge remained unfinished.

Story for fans & newcomers

GamersGlobal: What approach do you take to achieve the balancing act of continuing Heinrich's story and at the same time attracting newcomers?

Pride Twin: This is a topic that we have definitely invested a lot of time into. We distribute the flow of information in such a way that the necessary amount of knowledge is conveyed without being annoying. And even for hardcore fans: KCD was released in 2018. We are aware that we need to refresh our memories of certain things.

So there's probably more effort put into it than just making a “what happened so far” video. If the developers' plan works, connoisseurs should quickly feel at home and newcomers should not encounter hurdles that make it difficult for them to get involved in the medieval fantasy.

In the second part, this continues as the stakes rise: While Henry's personal tragedy arose from conflicts between local nobles and gangs of robbers, his search for revenge now brings him into contact with the kingdom's grand political stage: Von Aulitz was a captain of Sigismund, who lays claim to the Bohemian throne on which Wenceslaus IV sits at that time. The story of Kingdom Come – Deliverance 2 now wants to continue spinning the threads of Heinrich's story and at the same time bring newcomers on board without any prior knowledge.

It wasn't just Heinrich actors at the event Tom McKay very present, but also Luke Dale, who embodies the young nobleman Hans Capon. Hans also appeared prominently in the first part (and was a central character in one of the DLCs). The scenes shown from the sequel also underline the friendship between Hans and his squire Heinrich. In one of them they stand together in front of a lake because they are overdue for a swim. In a teasing way, Hans encourages himself and Heinrich to go into the cold water – like most of his class at the time, Heinrich never learned to swim. Even if both stick together, the RPG will certainly give you plenty of opportunities to go it alone. Maybe the two of them will part ways for a while, because the story of Kingdom Come – Deliverance 2 is supposed to start with a simple mission from Hans for Heinrich, which goes really wrong very quickly.

The city of Kutná Hora will be the heart of the open game world in the second part.

One of the largest medieval cities in video game history

For the sequel, the Warhorse Studios team has grown from around 110 to 250 employees. Similarly, the entire role-playing game will now be bigger: according to the studio boss and game director Daniel Vavra The main quest becomes longer and more epic, the running time of the cutscenes increases from around three hours in the first part to over five hours now and the game world becomes twice as large as that of its predecessor.

Bigger and more beautiful

GamersGlobal: Can you give us examples of what the team can now do with CryEngine that wouldn't have been possible in the previous version?

Pride Twin: We use a heavily modified version of CryEngine. This was already the case in 2018, but we are going one step further in every respect. We were now able to implement such gigantic places as Kutná Hora. That was definitely not possible before – at least not with our team size back then.

[…] Kutná Hora is definitely the biggest new addition to the game… in terms of the size of the city, but also in terms of the level of challenge for the team. We present here quite possibly one of the largest medieval cities ever to appear in a video game.

The team continues to use a modified version of the CryEngine in order to present even more attractive villages, forests and meadows six years after its predecessor. The heart of the game world will be the city of Kutná Hora, now known as Kutná Hora, located just over an hour's drive east of Prague. The name will sound familiar to those familiar with the first part, even if the place was only mentioned there but could not be visited. At the time of the events of Kingdom Come – Deliverance, Kutná Hora was one of the most important cities in Bohemia, having grown large and rich thanks to its silver deposits. The Prague groschen were also minted there.

The team reveals almost nothing about the location, but Art Director Viktor Höschl calls the implementation of the location the biggest challenge for the development team. Vávra jokingly calls the city “too big, in my opinion” and PR manager Stolz-Zwilling describes Kutná Hora as one of the largest medieval cities ever to appear in a video game.

In many minds, the idea of the “Dark Ages” still exists for this historical period. However, this is a later attribution in order to differentiate one's own time from this “dark time” (or to enhance the previous time of the Roman Empire). In scholarly circles it was partly an allusion to the comparatively few written sources from the early Middle Ages. In the announcement, the team also mentioned that they wanted to dispel prejudices about the Dark Ages, which were always dark, dirty and ravaged by disease – but in the announcement they only specifically referred to how colorful nature was implemented. At least as part of this event, there was no reference to renewed collaboration with historians and archaeologists.

As a reminder: This is what Kingdom Come – Deliverance looked like on PC in 4K with Ultra settings (without HD Texture Pack).
