Is it possible to follow and enjoy the Fallout series without prior gaming experience?

Series fallout is an adaptation of the world of video games eponyms. And if some people are still hesitant to get started for fear of not understanding anything, don't panic.

First point, you should know that fallout is not a strict adaptation of one of the RPGs available since 1997. Jonathan Nolan, the co-producer with Lisa Joy, and his teams opted for a 100% original story. It therefore has its own characters who, certainly, share the same world as those of the video games. The codes are repeated there, with a narrative base articulated around people forced to live in anti-atomic shelters after nuclear explosions.

You don't need to play the Fallout video games to enjoy the series

The creators of fallout had a keen eye by opting for a new story, which takes place after all the video games – according to the official chronology. This allows the series to open up to a wide audience, whether aficionado or neophyte. In any case, the series could hardly have been a strict adaptation, the RPGs offering a lot of freedom to the players (they are the ones who shape their adventure, according to their choices).

The series then takes the trouble to give the keys to understanding the universe fallout. In this case: underground, the rare survivors try to rebuild themselves as best they can and, outside, the radioactive air travels through fields of ruins that are not very frequented (but frequented). In this context, we follow Lucy, an inhabitant of Vault 33 who decides to go out to find her father, kidnapped by looters. As well as Maximus, apprentice soldier of a brotherhood which maintains order on the surface.

From the first episode, which lasts more than an hour, we understand how the Fallout universe works, which mixes post-apo and atompunk, with a slightly absurd or even humorous angle. Fans of video games will have a slight advantage over others with certain elements explained later (example: the huge bracelet worn by the characters) or more opaque references (example: the Nuke Cola drink). But there's nothing to worry about: the series fallout was written with the aim of being accessible to everyone.

Note, however, that fallout boasts very marked graphic violence. It is based on a lawless America, where individuals are ready to do anything to survive. Therefore, blood flows freely and the dead will not be counted. This heightened violence, justified by the story, may constitute a much greater obstacle than the fact that the series is based on video games.
