Helldivers 2 without transmog – Because “no apple tastes like bacon”

Transmog is a wonderful option for anyone who doesn't want to compromise on good stats or a fashionable appearance when it comes to their equipment. The ability to visually transform any object into another already exists in many games, but Arrowhead thinks this function is nonsense. There will therefore never be transmog in Helldivers 2.

Why transmog is nonsense and what it has to do with bacon

I personally love transmog systems. I'm reluctant to compromise when it comes to armor selection; after all, I want the best of both worlds. For my build, the armor should offer the best values, but at the same time I want to be able to live out my inner fashion icon. And why should certain values only be tied to a single appearance?

Arrowhead sees it completely differently. Although Helldivers 2 offers a huge selection of armor with different abilities, the aesthetics of the items are fixed and cannot be changed.

Creative director Johan Pilestedt completely rejected the idea of a transmog system.

“We won't do transmog. That doesn't make sense – the equipment looks different because it has different effects,” said Pilestedt on X.

“Swapping one for the other is like having an apple that tastes like bacon or vice versa.” But how cool would it be if a healthy food still offers all of its nutrients and benefits, but tastes like chocolate or, for that matter, bacon?

In Helldivers 2, the absence of this feature has an advantage because it means that all Helldivers can directly see what skills another teammate has. Nevertheless, some fans think it's a shame that Arrowhead doesn't want to be more flexible here. At least there could be a color adjustment, right?

“If you allow customization of armor colors, maybe that could be a good compromise? My main problem is that my best armor and my best helmet don't look good together at all, and finding certain armor that goes well with certain cloaks is sometimes very difficult,” writes a player and sums up the problem of many fans well.
