Helldivers 2: PSN requirement isn't coming after all

From “Very Positive” to “Mostly Negative” and no longer selling in countless countries – Helldivers 2 had probably his worst weekend ever. The announced one PSN mandatory has angered the players, which is why publisher Sony no longer wants to pursue its own plans.

Due to technical problems, the planned account requirement for the release of Helldivers 2 was suspended. but should be active again shortly. Anyone who doesn't register on PSN would no longer be able to play the shooter by June at the latest. The result? A Over 100,000 votes strong review bombing on Steam and ceasing sales in over 170 countries where it is not even possible to register a PSN account. Sony had to react and announced the role backwards.

Helldivers 2: Sony withdraws the PSN requirement

The PlayStation manufacturer apparently did not expect such a harsh reaction from the community in combination with the fact that Helldivers 2 is no longer allowed to be sold in countless countries. In a statement on Twitter they therefore rowed back: The PSN requirement is off the table. At least for now.

“The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network accounts to be linked for new players and for current players starting May 30, will not be implemented,” Sony said. We would also like to thank you for the numerous feedback, after all you would still learn “what that is Best for PC gamers is.”

However, PSN integration may not work disappear completely: Regarding future plans, Sony would like to keep the community informed. It is therefore possible that those responsible will discuss the idea intensively again internally and then announce an alternative approach.

Trust has suffered

Although the PSN requirement is not initially included, the image of Helldivers 2 has suffered as a result of the campaign. Because as everyone knows: building trust is not easy, regaining trust is even more difficult. Helldivers 2 is currently up Steam continue to be at mostly negative user reviews, but the trend is upwards: many buyers are changing their rating back to positive. It will still take a while for the co-op shooter to return to a positive mood.

I know that too Johan Pilestedt, the CEO and Creative Director of Swedish developer Arrowhead. Over the weekend, he mostly showed solidarity with the players, even if he didn't necessarily rate their methods of negatively negatively, not only Helldivers 2, but also all of the company's other games found.

However, he also wrote on Twitter: “Ouch, straight to the user reviews. Well I guess that is justified. I'm sorry to everyone for how this all turned out. I hope we can make amends and regain trust by continuing to provide a great gaming experience.”

Following the announcement that linking to a PSN account will remain optional, reported he speaks up again – thanked at Sony, but of course also at the players. “Together we want to set a new standard for what a live game is and how developers and the community can support each other to create the best gaming experiences,” Pilestedt concluded on the topic.

It will be interesting to see whether that Helldivers 2 fiasco will impact future Sony releases on PC. The first sample Ghost of Tsushima is expected to be released in mid-Maywhich will then appear for the first time on Steam and in the Epic Games Store.
