As the company has now reported, Copilot penetrated Windows Server by mistake. The issue also affected systems running Windows 10 22H2, Windows 11 21H2 and later.

“The Edge browser update version 123.0.2420.65 released on March 28, 2024 may erroneously install a new package (MSIX) called Microsoft chat provider for Copilot in Windows on Windows devices. As a result, the Microsoft Copilot application may appear in the list of installed applications in the Settings menu,” the company explains.

Microsoft emphasizes that the Copilot app added by Edge to devices cannot actually be used to run Copilot and does not collect any user or system data.

“It is important to note that the Microsoft chat provider for Copilot in Windows does not run any code or processes, and does not receive, analyze, or transmit device or environment data in any way,” Microsoft explains.

According to the company, the package is intended solely to prepare certain Windows devices for the future inclusion of Windows Copilot, and will not appear on all devices. Moreover, even if the installed component causes Copilot to appear as installed on the system, it will not fully install or activate Copilot.
