Almost four months before the starting signal in Cologne, it is clear: Nintendo will not be taking part in Gamescom 2024.

Advance ticket sales for Gamescom 2024 have been running for around four weeks from August 21st to 25th. The catch: Traditionally, at this point in time there is no indication as to which game manufacturers are actually there in Cologne. According to its own information, Koelnmesse has recorded one “overwhelming demand” on the part of the exhibitors for stand space – but the first names should first be announced “to be announced at a later date.”

Today, Monday, the first video game giant has created facts. Because unlike 2023, Nintendo will not be taking part in Gamescom 2024. At the same time, hopes for a Gamescom premiere of the rumored successor console for the Nintendo Switch, which has sold more than 140 million times since March 2017, are dwindling.

When asked, a spokeswoman for Nintendo of Europe said: “Gamescom is a central event in Nintendo’s event calendar. This year, however, after careful consideration, we decided against taking part in Cologne. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch as part of other Germany-wide events.”

At Gamescom 2023, Nintendo set up gaming stations, photo and selfie spots as well as a large show stage in Hall 9, which was used for tournaments and competitions. Highlights: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4. Publishers like Ubisoft contributed further innovations like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown at. Nintendo hit a nerve with visitors: five Gamescom Awards went to the Japanese company.

The fact that Nintendo, one of the three major game console manufacturers, is canceling is undoubtedly a setback for the leading trade fair in Cologne: The Super Mario-Group is traditionally considered one of the crowd pullers on the site.

With an officially reported 320,000 visitors, Gamescom returned to the pre-Corona numbers last year. As always, you can find all information about Gamescom 2024 – opening times, events, tickets and much more – on GamesWirtschaft.
