George Miller broke Charlize Theron's heart. Because the 48-year-old actress is not allowed to return to her role from Mad Max: Fury Road for his latest film. Instead, Anya Taylor-Joy is stepping into Theron's shoes to take on the title role of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
But why was Theron actually replaced as Furiosa? George Miller personally provides this in an interview with Empire (via IGN) an explanation.

But first, a little context: Furiosa tells the backstory to Fury Road and covers a period of around 15 years. So it's about a younger version of Furiosa. It is definitely obvious that Miller chose a younger actress than Theron.

In fact, the Mad Max director had originally considered using digital de-aging. In his opinion, the technology is not sophisticated enough for this.

Charlize Theron would have loved to return as Imperator Furiosa, but there is no bad blood between her and George Miller. In fact, according to Empire (also via IGN) became aware of Anya Taylor-Joy thanks to Edgar Wright, who previously played a major role in his film Last Night in Soho.
According to Miller, there are also parallels between Theron and Taylor-Joy, who convinced the filmmaker to cast her as Furiosa:
