Fallout 4: A lot of trouble about the next-gen update

Yesterday the time has finally come: the hotly anticipated next-gen update for Fallout 4 is here. However, there are obviously plenty of anger and problems in this context.

For years, Fallout fans had to wait until the longed-for next-gen update for Fallout 4 became available. Yesterday the time had finally come and Bethesda made the corresponding patch available for download. Apparently not everything has gone according to plan since the release and there is a lot of trouble.

What is certainly positive is that thanks to the next-gen update and the performance mode, significantly better frame rates can now be achieved when gaming and there are also a number of new quests. However, there are plenty of problems and bugs to complain about around the globe.

The community complains about the fact that a number of modifications no longer work. In addition, what is particularly annoying is that save states that have already been used for hundreds of hours of play are apparently damaged in the course of the next-gen update. PC gamers complain that the support for ultrawide monitors that was also introduced does not work as intended. And last but not least, there are also complaints that the frame rate still noticeably drops and drops in dense gaming areas.

To address the topic of modifications again separately: The very popular Fallout 4 Script Extender is one of the victims of the next-gen update. This is a basic mod that generally expands the scripting capabilities of Fallout 4. Many other mods rely on the Script Extender – and this no longer really works. The makers have already announced that they are working on an update, but cannot yet specify a time frame by which it should be available. Against this background, the release of the extensive Fallout: London mod, which was actually finally planned, was recently postponed indefinitely.

Separately, another circumstance in the context of the update is also making negative headlines: Anyone who plays Fallout 4 via PS Plus apparently cannot download the upgrade for free – even though everyone assumed that it was free. The next-gen patch comes with a price tag via this delivery route – a fact that Bethesda is said to have already taken care of.

And: Players on the Steam Deck complain that their settings are completely deleted by the update. In short: the developers will probably still have a lot of work to do with the next-gen update in the coming days and weeks.
