Like the many rumors which preceded the release of the PS5 Slim, the Pro model is not spared either… The game console – which has not yet been revealed by Sony – promises to be a version more more of the basic PlayStation 5 (like the PS4 Pro for the PS4). The media InsiderGaming | The Vergetwo trusted sources, mention significant improvements in resolution, framerate, ray tracing via a graphics card 45% faster than the standard PS5 ! Enough to guarantee the much-demanded 4K / 60 frames per second with the possibility of reaching 8K.

The big part of the PS5 Pro is therefore its GPU – described as more “imposing” by The Verge – which would benefit from more solid system memory, designed for ray tracing. Insider Gaming talks about 33.5 Teraflops (compared to 10.2 on the base PlayStation 5) and especially “PSSR”, the equivalent of Nvidia's DLSS but on PS5. Basically, an AI that improves resolution and framerate. And for the occasion, Sony has even developed a “custom architecture dedicated to machine learning” The Verge tells us. It is in particular thanks to this technology that the PS5 Pro will be able to guarantee 4K / 60 FPS.

On PS5 Pro, the processor also gets a facelift, but to a lesser extent. By default, its power is identical to the CPU of the standard PlayStation 5 (3.5GHz) but, now, the chip benefits from a high frequency mode which allows it to go up to 3.85GHz. The choice of mode will be up to the developers and will allow them to allocate more power to the processor if necessary! A game like Cities Skylines 2, for example, requires a robust CPU to quickly load the many elements on the screen. The addition of this mode is therefore synonymous with superior performance on a case-by-case basis.… Let us point out that when the CPU is “at full capacity”, the GPU, for its part, logically receives less power – which means a drop in performance “of around 1%”, reports The Verge.

A small percentage that shouldn't change much – especially since developers will benefit from faster system memory (short-term memory, not storage), going from 448GB to 576GB per second (an increase of 28%)! The total system memory itself will, moreover, be increased: 1.2 GB more than in the past, for a total of 13.7 GB on PS5 Pro. Enough to give a boost to PSSR and ray tracing. Finally, The Verge states that the console benefits from a “more powerful architecture” dedicated to very realistic reflections for a result “3 times superior” to the basic PS5. For its part, Insider Gaming talks about a detachable disc player like on the last model.

PS5 Pro: Release date, power, price, everything we know about Sony's next console

Release date, price, design, what do we know?

Having said that, there are three unknowns left: the release date, the price and the design… For the first, The Verge and Insider Gaming agree on end of 2024 with the possibility that this date will be moved due to the lack of PlayStation exclusives this year. According to Insider Gaming, Sony Studios received their PS5 Pro development kit in September 2023 (early 2024 for third-party studios). “The Japanese company expects that every title submitted for certification in August will be compatible with the PS5 Pro” writes The Verge. More than just compatibility, Sony's goal is to achieve “significant improvements” on each of its games – which will earn them the “PS5 Pro Optimized” label.

Concerning the price and the design, it's a mystery and a gumball. But we can already do the following operation: more efficient components take up more space and cost more… We can therefore imagine that the PS5 will return to its original dimensions, 30% larger than the current version (the one with the detachable disk drive). And in terms of price, the PS4 Pro at the time was €100 more than the base machine! Knowing that the PS5 Slim Digital Edition is going for €449, the PS5 Pro could start at €550 or €600. Only one thing is missing: an announcement from Sony.
