Early Access end brings bad news for console gamers

“7 Days to Die” is leaving early access and will also appear on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in version 1.0. However, switching to consoles is not enough with a free upgrade.

“Worse than any zombie apocalypse?” was the headline of ours published in 2016 Tests for “7 Days to Die”. At the time, Olaf criticized not least the price of the console version, which at 35 euros was significantly higher than the amount that had to be paid for early access on Steam. “You can expect more than just a preview version, right?” was the further comment. In the end it was enough for a 5.0 rating.

“7 Days to Die” is still in early access, but with an end in sight. As developer The Fun Pimps announces, the next big update not only brings numerous innovations to the zombie game. The now eleven-year-old title is also leaving the development phase and is being released as version 1.0.

What would normally be a cause for joy turns out to be another tragedy for console gamers. Because you will be asked to pay again.

PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players pay again

With the launch of version 1.0 of “7 Days to Die,” the price of the game increases to $44.99 across platforms. For comparison: the game costs $29.99 in the PlayStation Store. On Steam $24.99. Euro prices may vary. While in the local PlayStation Store 34.99 euros are due, it is 22.99 euros on Steam – due to a sale at the moment even just 5.51 euros.

PC players also enjoy a financial advantage when switching to version 1.0 of “7 Days to Die”: The early access version of the game is converted at no additional cost, while console players are asked to pay again.

“Owners of the old version will have to purchase the new title,” says the FAQ for the console release of the finished game.

After all, buyers may not have to pay the full amount because negotiations are ongoing with the operators of the console platforms. “We are working closely with Sony and Microsoft to offer owners of the previous digital version a discount when purchasing the new console version.”

PC gamers, on the other hand, can breathe a sigh of relief: “Your PC/Steam copy of 7 Days to Die is still yours and nothing will change. […] We don’t want to force current users to spend more money to play the game they’ve always supported.”

Old version of 7 Days to Die is flying out of stores

It was decided early on to focus on a “new” version of the game that is unified with the PC version. This also means that sales of the previous console version of “7 Days to Die” will be discontinued.

“Due to product and brand confusion, we will be removing the old console version from digital outlets once the new version is released,” the FAQ reads. However, purchases made previously do not lose their validity.

Please note: The existing savegames are incompatible with the new version of “7 Days to Die”, which applies to all platforms due to the version jump.

It also affects Game Pass subscribers: “7 Days to Die” will be the library Left at the end of April. At this point there are no plans to re-enter Game Pass. However, future possibilities are under review.

When will 7 Days to Die be released for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S?

The team hasn't given an exact date for the release of the full 1.0 console version, but is aiming to release it “just a few weeks after the release of PC 1.0 Stable.”
