Disappointment as Baldur’s Gate 4 is Not on the Horizon, but Larian Studios Has Big Plans

During the latest Community Update for Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios shared with fans an overview of upcoming projects. And it looks extremely promising.

Baldur's Gate 3 will not receive any DLC or sequel from Larian Studios, much to the dismay of fans. The cheerful independent Belgian studio once again prefers to go it alone for its next adventures. These involve not one, but two games. We are even told that it is “ their best work to date “. Our curiosity is definitely piqued.

A future without Baldur's Gate 4, but still as promising!

The upcoming Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 could well be the last major update for GOTY 2023. Afterwards, however, the game should receive some fixes to keep it in shape. For Larian Studios, it is already time to look to the future. THE Community Update 26 gave fans a glimpse of what’s to come. After announcing that they would not be making Baldur's Gate 4, the independent Belgian studio is now working on two new games. Even more exciting news, Larian Studios seems very confident and enthusiastic about them.

We are currently working on two new games. We couldn't be more excited about the future. All of this is still very embryonic, but fills us with the same sacred fire in our guts that accompanied us during the six years of development of Baldur's Gate 3. A fire that pushes us to create immersive experiences dictated by your choices. We can't wait for you to join us on this next adventure!

Swen Vincke

This is certainly something to excite fans of the extremely talented independent studio! Swen Vincke, director of Larian Studios, also shared the contagious enthusiasm of his teams. “ I don't know if we'll get there, but based on what we're planning, I think our next few games will be our best work yet. I'm excited like a kid looking at our first sketches. I want to show them to everyone, but it's still too early. Yes, I'm hyped, because it smells really good “.

What could Larian Studios be working on?

We can already speculate as to what will follow the masterful Baldur's Gate 3 at Larian Studios. Before tackling the Dungeons & Dragons license, he mainly made himself known with the Divinity license. Original Sin 2 was, upon its release in 2017, one of the best C-RPGs of all time, only dethroned by… Baldur's Gate 3 in 2023.

It would therefore clearly not be surprising if Larian Studios returned to its first love for a next game. The studio was also harboring certain frustrations when it came to adapting Dungeons & Dragons to the video game format. Swen Vincke's teams particularly wanted to explore new combat mechanics, but were unable to do so with Baldur's Gate 3. His return to Divinity would therefore once again allow him to test innovative concepts in complete freedom and independence.

In addition to Divinity, Larian Studios is eminently known for heroic fantasy works filled with humor and rich storytelling guided by player choices. But maybe it's time to take a risk and export this to a whole new science fiction license? We will know for sure when the happy Belgian studio is ready to tell us more. Like him, we are truly looking forward to participating in these new adventures! This despite the absence of Astation, Shadowheart, Karlach, Lae'Zel, Gayle, Wyll and all these wonderful encounters made in Baldur's Gate 3, definitely one of the most notable games of recent years.

A Baldur's Gate 4 without Larian Studios

As for a possible Baldur's Gate 4, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have already started discussions with other developers to take over. “ We will take our time to find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product to represent the future of Baldur's Gate. We take this very, very seriously, like all the decisions we make for the rest of our catalog. We don't rush to choose our partners or the next products we should consider “. At least that's what Eugene Evans, senior vice president of digital strategy and licensing for both companies, said.
