Compared to this Steam horror game, Blair Witch Project almost seems like an idyllic walk in the forest

Kids of the 1990s get when the title is mentioned Blair Witch Project immediately nostalgic goosebumps. The very cheaply produced horror film from 1999 was a huge surprise success at the time, relying on a found footage look, i.e. it looks like an old VHS film.

Silent Breath also relies on this look. But the highlight of the indie horror game is completely different. We'll explain to you exactly how the title wants to scare you.

Your microphone becomes a nasty traitor

In Silent Breath you have to find several people in a spooky forest who were previously lost there. Sounds easy, but it probably would be if eyeless monsters, killer clowns and other fellows weren't constantly chasing you.

Let's come to the highlight mentioned earlier: Silent Breath uses your microphone in a very interesting way. If you run through the pitch-black forest at night, your pursuers will do everything they can to trigger a jump scare and make you scream.

As soon as you scream, the end of the game gets closer – and not the good one. There are two endings, depending on how much you strain your vocal cords and lure the monsters onto your trail. If you give up the spoon, you have to start over.

The gameplay trailer is already not for the faint of heart:

Simply memorizing the route to the missing people is not possible either. Because Silent Breath Generates the forest anew every time you start the game. So you have to orientate yourself each time and can't fall back on previous experiences.

Unreal Engine 5, but still no graphics board

Technically, Silent Breath uses Unreal Engine 5, but you can hardly tell from the game. You shouldn't expect a high-gloss look, but that would be a bit unrealistic. Because eventually Silent Breath will developed by just one person.

However, some of the UE5's strengths can still be seen, especially the good lighting and the detailed vegetation are impressive. In order to further emphasize the VHS cassette look of bygone days, the game uses: continuously to the image format 4:3.

Silent Breath doesn't have a set release date yet. Early access is expected to start soon, and the developer is aiming for a final version by the end of the year.

By the way: If you like the concept of using your microphone, the horror game Don't Scream could also be something for you. Steffi tells you in detail what this is all about here.
