“In five years, the CNIL has established itself as a technological and economic regulator of personal data“, declared Marie-Laure Denis, president of the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties (Cnil) recently renewed in her functions, during presentation of the annual report of the authority.
The year 2023 was special in at least two respects. It marks the fifth anniversary of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is also the year when the CNIL received the greatest number of complaints with a figure of 16,433 complaintswhich represents an increase of 35% compared to 2022.

More than 4,400 requests rejected
In detail, these complaints are at the origin of 80 checks, 81 corrective measures (formal notices or reminders of legal obligations) and 22 sanctions (fines and injunctions with or without penalty). More than 4,400 applications were rejected at the same time. Important point: as was the case in 2022, the CNIL processed as many and even more complaints than it received.
