Cities Skylines 2: Postponed – This is why the spring release for the consoles fails

The building strategy “Cities Skylines 2” was originally supposed to be released for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in the course of spring. However, as the responsible developers of Colossal Order admitted, the console release will be postponed to an indefinite date.

“Cities Skylines 2” was released for the PC in October 2023. Unfortunately for the community, the construction simulation had to contend with numerous bugs and other problems.

This includes the Beach Properties DLC. Here only four percent of user ratings fell on Steam positive. As the developers of Colossal Order admitted in a recent announcement, the studio responded to this development with a drastic step. This is how buyers of “Beach Properties” get back. In addition, all further DLCs have been postponed until 2025.

Furthermore, the Colossal Order status update shows that it is not just the DLCs for the PC version that are appearing later than planned. Nothing will come of the planned release of the console port of “Cities Skylines 2” this spring.

Console release postponed to an indefinite date

“We would also like to address the pending console release. As you know, our plan was to release it in the spring of this year,” Cololssal Order continued. “Due to the uncertainty we face and to avoid making further promises that we may not be able to keep, we have hesitated to provide an actual release date.”

“We have struggled to get Cities: Skylines 2 to the required level of optimization for a console release, but are now confident that an upcoming build delivery in April will show sufficient progress to move forward with a release candidate and then a release build at a scheduled date in October.”

“However, until we have seen and evaluated the progress in these builds, we will not be able to confirm the release date. Even then, a certain degree of uncertainty always remains,” it continues.

Developers promise the best possible experience on the consoles

According to their own statements, the developers learned lessons from the incorrect release of the PC version and want to deliver the best possible experience for the console release of “Cities Skylines 2”. “Our aim is to deliver the experience you all deserve at launch. But that will take time,” explains the studio.

“It is important to note that the team working on the console release is working separately from our PC development team, so they are moving forward without dividing our attention or time,” the developers concluded.

“Cities Skylines 2” offers various improvements and new features compared to the first part. Including improved graphics or an enlargement of your cities. When building your metropolises in “Cities Skylines 2”, for example, you can use 150 map tiles.

A significant improvement compared to its predecessor, in which you had to make do with 81 tiles.
