Big update revealed, implements wishes from the community

Hardly any game made such waves last year as Starfield: huge hype, huge sales figures – but also a surprising number of buyers who were disappointed by the sci-fi role-playing game. The technology is too old-fashioned, the planets are too empty, the space battles are too lame – the points of criticism in the user reviews cannot be overlooked.

Nevertheless, you can have a lot of fun with “Fallout 3 in Space”, as the many positive reviews that the game has received show. Co-tester Carlo sees it similarly, he finds in his column much praise for Starfield, but at the same time makes it clear that the game leaves a lot of untapped potential. There were also in the community many requests for changes loud, but so far Bethesda has hardly been able to look into its cards: There have been smaller patches since the release in September 2023, but they didn't go far enough for many buyers. Bethesda's poor information policy is probably one reason why Starfield (buy now / €62.99 ) since its initial release has lost massively in player numbers.

But now things could finally be looking up again for Starfield: Bethesda has it Biggest patch to date presented, which should appear shortly and is now already available as a beta. In addition to all sorts of bug fixes, you can also expect a few useful improvements that many fans have requested.

New maps for Starfield

This innovation should probably please most players: Bethesda has “upper world” locations for everyone new, very pretty cards crafted. Not only do they offer significantly more information, the terrain is now also clearly visible. There are also new markings on the map and in scanner mode so that you can find your destination more quickly. There are also new fast travel points in all major cities.

New gameplay options

Sounds boring at first, but it could be pretty cool: In the game settings you can nown many new parameters and customize your requirements individually. Regardless of whether it's ammunition weight, healing, ship combat or carrying capacity, you can now adjust all of this and more in several steps. The highlight: If you deliberately make a feature more difficult, you will receive more experience points as a reward. If you lower the claim instead, there will be a small deduction on the XP gain. There's a little foretaste in the video.

Even more detail improvements in the patch

The May update delivers a whole series of bug fixes and smaller improvements. For example, the menus for looting and trading have been slightly improved, and you can now customize the interior of spaceships in detail. Completely empty ship modules were also installed for those who would like to design their own.

And another detail for everyone who prefers to play from the third-person view: If you wish, you can now conduct dialogues without a close-up of the person you are talking to; the camera then simply remains in the shoulder perspective.

There's also good news for Xbox Series X owners: After the update, you'll have the choice between a quality and performance mode. In performance mode, some graphic details such as resolution, but also effects such as lighting or crowds, are reduced. On VRR-capable screens you can also choose whether you want to aim for 30, 40, 60 or an unlimited frame rate. Without a VRR display you can choose between 30 and 60 frames per second, although tearing may occur here. All of these innovations only affect the Series X, so there are no new graphics options on Xbox Series S.

But the extensive patch has a lot more to offer. Here you can find the complete patch notes from Bethesda.

When will the big May patch for Starfield be released?

Bethesda will update officially on May 15th for PC and Xbox Series consoles. But you can use the patch try it out now! On the PC you can already download the update (via the beta branch) on Steam.

Add-on and vehicles: This is how it continues with Starfield

Despite a relatively long radio silence, Bethesda continued to work hard on Starfield. Finally, the first major expansion, Shattered Space, is scheduled to appear in the fall and, according to Bethesda, will be huge. Nothing is known about the contents of the add-on, but it will definitely be free for Season Pass owners. The developers are also currently working on ground vehicles that will make exploring the planets much quicker – There's a first foretaste in the developer video. So Bethesda is actually working on exactly the feature you want in our large satisfaction survey particularly desired.

But one question still concerns fans today: Will Starfield perhaps one day appear on PS5? There have been repeated reports of this in recent months. Although Bethesda never promised a PS5 implementation, that doesn't mean fans are giving up hope – after all, Microsoft only recently started porting some of its titles to the Sony console.
