Cannes Hospital Targeted by Cyberattack from Notorious Lockbit Perpetrator

Two weeks after the cyberattack on the Simone-Veil hospital in Cannes, the hacker group Lockbit claimed responsibility for the attack. This gang of pirates had, however, been destabilized by a recent law enforcement operation.

The party was short-lived. Just two months after a law enforcement operation, Lockbit, the most feared hacker group, took responsibility for the cyberattack against the Cannes hospital on April 30, 2024. The hackers are threatening to reveal all the stolen data if a ransom is not paid before the evening of May 1st. The amount of the sum demanded is not communicated.

The Simone-Veil hospital suffered a cyberattack on April 16. In a statementthe establishment declared the next day: “ Approximately a third of non-urgent operating room schedules were canceled by medical decision. The operating program will be 90% assured tomorrow. Several non-urgent consultations have been canceled. Certain consultations requiring little IT requirements and concerning known chronic patients were able to be maintained. »

Lockbit, a gang of hackers who never stop?

In February, law enforcement from 10 countries attacked the Lockbit gang in a spectacular operation. Members were arrested, the hackers' platform was hacked, information on the cybercriminals was extracted and the police even mocked the hackers on their own site. Just when we thought that Lockbit would be seriously slowed down after this coup, the gang returns and targets France again with a cyberattack against a hospital.

Lockbit is by far the most prolific cybercriminal gang. This gang specializes in ransomware attacks: once hackers have infiltrated the system, they encrypt and therefore block all data, demanding a huge ransom to make it accessible. If the victim does not pay the imposed amount, all of the files will be put online or resold. This is probably the sentence that awaits the Cannes hospital since the French public service has a rule not to pay ransoms.
