She became known for her roles in the hit television series Euphoria and The Handmaid's Tale. In 2024, Sydney Sweeney hits the headlines with her less than memorable role in Madame Web. But everything was calculated. The American actress has a career plan in mind which she applies methodically. She even claims to have “no limits”.

An actress on the rise, but…

Sydney Sweeney needs no introduction. With her striking and unconventional roles in the HBO series “Euphoria” and Hulu “The Handmaid's Tale”, she broke through in Hollywood. Two years later, it asserts itself in The White Lotus and becomes a safe bet for SVOD services which wish to capitalize on names known to the general public. Although her career began very early (in 2009 in the series Heroes), she still remains for many the one who plays opposite Zendaya in Sam Levinson's creation… Cassandra “Cassie” Howard.

In 2024, she invites herself into the superheroic universe of the Weaver of the House of Ideas through the back door. Sydney Sweeney accepts for reasons that we will detail later the role of the future “Spider-Woman” Julia Cornwall in Madame Web alongside Dakota Johnson and Tahar Rahim. This new iteration of Sony's Spider-Man Universe (or SSU) is being demolished by critics – 12% on RottenTomatoes – and is not convincing anyone to pay for a movie ticket. Madame Web struggles to exceed 100 million US dollars, which makes it de facto the worst failure in the history of “Marvel”.

A well-oiled strategy

Sydney Sweeney is well aware of the impact such a failure could have on her career, but everything was thought out in advance. The actress starred in Madame Web for one and only reason… to get closer to Sony’s bigwigs to “sell” them certain projects that are close to her heart. She also returned to this well-orchestrated strategy which bore fruit with our colleagues at GQ :

For me, this film was a cornerstone since it allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without Madame Web, I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers there,” she explained to GQ. “I make career choices not just by focusing on stories, but also by making strategic business decisions. It's thanks to this that I was able to sell Everything But You and also get Barbarella. -Sydney Sweeney

On March 24, 2024, in the middle of post-promotion for Madame Web, Sydney Sweeney gave an interview to Madame Figaro in which she discusses her next projects including the horror film Immaculée. The actress plays Sister Cécilia, invited to a convent in Italy. Unfortunately for her, her stay quickly turns into a nightmare. Afterwards, the journalist asks her if certain subjects are likely to set her off her hinges. His response is equivocal to say the least:

I don't see any. I am very open, and I like to talk about everything. I have the same approach in my profession as an actress: I don't set a priori limits on the type of scenes that I could play. -Sydney Sweeney
