Baldur's Gate III: Now there might be a sequel, but…

Baldur's Gate III became THE most successful title of last year, but a sequel didn't seem to be in the cards. Now a sequel could still come!

Larian Studios delivered in a big way with Baldur's Gate III, celebrated unexpectedly great commercial success with the RPG epic, received excellent reviews and won numerous Game of the Year Awards – but after careful consideration, the development studio also ruled out a sequel in March. like just a larger story DLC for the game. But there is still hope for fans of the brand, because a sequel to Baldur's Gate is still conceivable in the end.

The rights holders Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast want to continue to build on the success of Baldur's Gate III and are planning a sequel to the RPG epic. However, the whole thing comes with a big BUT, because the fact remains: the game will probably not come from Larian Studios at least.

In an interview with PC gamers D&D rights holder Hasbro spoke on the topic in the person of Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy & Licensing Eugene Evans. Accordingly, they are currently exploring potential partners who could develop a new Baldur's Gate video game. However, even if it is implemented, it will likely take many years before a possible release can be expected.

“We are taking our time to find the right partner, the right approach and the right product that can represent the future of Baldur's Gate. We take this very, very seriously – as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio “We don't make quick decisions about who to partner with on new products and which products to consider,” said Evans.

Evans also reiterated the hope within the company that it won't take another 25 years until the next part is released. After all, Baldur's Gate III appeared many, many years after the already excellent second part.

However, the chance that characters from Baldur's Gate III will make an appearance elsewhere is said to be quite high. The protagonists in the game are also owned by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast – and not Larian Studios. So other games in the Dungeons & Dragons universe could make use of these in future game titles.

The journey of Baldur's Gate seems to be continuing – although not with Larian Studios as the developer. It remains to be seen which project they will specifically dedicate themselves to.
