A tragic bus accident in Croatia has claimed the lives of at least 12 people, leaving many injured as well.
Twelve people were killed and 31 others were injured, 18 of them seriously, in a bus crash in northwestern Croatia on Saturday morning, Croatian police said.
The police added that rescue teams had been deployed to the scene of the accident where traffic was cut off and that the bus concerned was registered in Poland.
“All the victims are Polish citizens, we can at this stage confirm that,” a spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry told Polish TVN24, adding that the bus was registered in Warsaw.
According to the Croatian Interior Minister, the passengers on the bus were adult pilgrims on their way to Medjugorje, a Catholic pilgrimage site in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
