Are developers getting greedy now?

Hey people! Do you already know the latest trend in the shooter genre? “Extraction Shooter” like Escape from Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown are totally popular!

Well, at least that's what they thought for a while. After Battle Royale was such a huge success and every developer and his grandma Suddenly wanting to bring their own battle royale shooter onto the market came after the initial euphoria disillusionment quicklyG. Three or four major battle royale games are probably enough. All subsequent attempts failed to generate nearly as much hype or even failed.

Escape from Tarkov: Where are the extraction shooters?

High risk, high reward

After the disillusionment, however, came soon next big trend in shooter land: “Extraction shooters” should be the next big thing. Ubisoft, E.A, Activision – everyone jumped on the bandwagon and wanted to develop something in this direction.

Basically, this type of shooter is very exciting. The principle is often referred to as: “High Risk, High Reward” described. So it's about a lot of risk, but also about high rewards.

As a rule, like in Battle Royale, you are thrown onto a large map with other players. But this isn't about eliminating each other; to escape alive.

You can approach the whole thing the Rambo way, but you can also use a quiet tone – and even have an advantage. If you move quietly and act patiently, you can attack from an ambush or bypass opponents entirely. Extraction shooters often offer one higher voltage level than normal multiplayer shooters. Battle Royale has that too, but in Extraction it's even more intense.

This is also due to another major risk factor: the equipment. You first have to look for your equipment on the map and, ideally, extract it successfully. Then you have to decide what to take with you into the next match, because if you die you lose everythingwhat you have collected. In addition, you complete tasks on the map to receive more rewards such as loot or story elements. So you have to constantly weigh up how long you stay on the map and potentially carry a target on your back.

A different (tension) level

If you reach the extraction point with full pockets and half shot and make it just in time, that's a really good feeling. And the big players also wanted to join in with this feeling.

But if we take a closer look at the extraction shooter market, not much seems to have happened. Especially in the last few days I have asked myself more and more: Where are all the promised extraction shooters? They would be important right now!

In the field of extraction games have two titles have been established so far: Hunt: Showdown from the German studio Crytek and the absolute top dog Escape from Tarkov. The latter has achieved great success with a hardcore approach, with over 100,000 concurrent players over the years. However, the makers have also been playing “High Risk, High Reward” in the last few weeks – only in real life. And then they lost too.

A few weeks ago the so-called Unheard Edition announced, at a price of 250 euros. Among other things, this automatically includes a better reputation with one of the dealers, which leads to faster, better prices and therefore leads to more money for better equipment. High costs are nothing new for Tarkov players. After all, there was previously the Edge of Darkness edition for 150 euros. However, they are very sensitive to Pay 2 Win. But the Tarkov developers went one step further.
