Blade Runner is one of the best sci-fi film series ever and has significantly shaped the cyberpunk genre.

Despite this, both Ridley Scott's original and Denis Villeneuve's sequel Blade Runner 2049 both flopped in theaters. Now there's another sequel – but not as a film, but in the form of a TV series.

New director and start of filming for Blade Runner 2099

And this is finally really getting going: How Deadline reports, Amazon was able to nail down a director and start filming two years after the official announcement:

  • Blade Runner 2099 will begin filming in April 2024
  • Jonathan van Tulleken (Shogun, Misfits, Upload) will direct the first two episodes.

It is currently unknown when Blade Runner 2099 will premiere on Amazon Prime Video, considering that filming will start soon, a release in 2025 is not unlikely. By the way, Blade Runner 2099 is as Limited series planned, which is why cyberpunk fans shouldn't expect a second season.

Details about the story or the cast are currently still awaited. Of course, clever foxes should notice that Blade Runner 2099 takes place exactly 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049 with Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford.

Originally, production should have started in summer 2023but was slowed down by the big Hollywood strike: Because major film studios and streaming services refused for months to grant screenwriters and actors better wages and fairer working conditions, numerous films and series are taking longer to arrive.

Due to the production postponement, the original director, Jeremy Podeswa (Game of Thrones, The Handmaid's Tale, The Pacific), had to say goodbye due to scheduling conflicts. Ridley Scott is executive producing still on board.
