A legendary cult game series from the 80s continues

Many gamers of the older generation will certainly still be familiar with the cult game series “Golden Ax”. Fans can be happy: Golden Ax will receive a sequel – as an animated series.

The first part of Golden Axe was published by Sega in 1989 and the entire series belongs to the beat-em-up genre. In Part 1, players had to fight their way through various levels in the land of Yuria and rescue a kidnapped princess. Zelda sends greetings!

In the three subsequent parts, the players even had several ways to complete the game and bring the evil Death Adder to his knees. Of course, this is nothing special today, but in the early 90s this mechanic was a real innovation.

Golden Ax: Sega releases prototype of a game – but developers didn't know about it

Sega has released the Golden Ax Reborn prototype on Steam. However, the developers at the time knew nothing about this.

Cult classic Golden Ax – a legend among indexed games

Due to its brutality, Part 1 of the Golden Ax series was banned from the BPjS index immediately after its release in 1989, which the game was only allowed to leave again in 2006 as part of the release of the Sega Mega Drive Collection for the PS2.

The sequel “Golden Axe: Beast Rider,” which was released in 2007 for the PS3, also landed directly on the platform index.

Perhaps it was this indexing of the games that gave them a large fan base and a legendary reputation to this day. Nevertheless, this game series was quiet for many years – until now. But what can fans look forward to now?

Golden Ax as a series – that's what we know about the return of the classic

Golden Ax is currently owned by Sega and Comedy Central revived it as an animated series. As in the cult games, the heroes Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead have to slaughter their way through the land of Yuria to put an end to the oh-so-evil Death Adder. For this, the heroes receive active support from the inexperienced adventurer Hampton Squib.

There will initially be ten parts of the series, but if it's successful there might even be more – who knows. Joe Chandler (American Dad) is known as the showrunner and the speakers in the original English version are Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Danny Pudi (Community, Mythic Quest), Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), Carl Tart (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Lisa Gilroy (Glamorous) appears.

We are very excited about this series and maybe it will even be the starting signal for a new edition Games classics. Of course, as always, hope dies last for Golden Ax fans. In any case, it's nice when such milestones don't completely disappear into the abyss of oblivion.
