A DLC, a sequel or something else? Official tweet fuels speculation

At the start of the new week, those responsible at Housemarque are causing new speculation about the future of the “Returnal” brand. In detail, it could be an imminent announcement.

With “Returnal”, the Finnish development studio Housemarque released a rougelite shooter for the PS5 in April 2021, which was well received by the community and critics alike.

An implementation for the PC followed in February of last year. After those responsible at Housemarque have repeatedly indicated in the past that they would like to return to “Returnal”, the Finnish studio has now provided new speculation and plenty of things to talk about.

Via X (formerly Twitter), Housemarque published a picture of the “Returnal” protagonist Selene in a broken mirror. The tweet also refers to tomorrow, Tuesday.

What is Housemarque working on?

The fact that a reunion with Selene awaits in the shared image suggests that Housemarque is indeed planning an announcement about “Returnal”. What this refers to in detail, however, remains to be seen.

In addition to an expansion or DLC, an update with new features or a jump to another medium could be an option.

Even if the release of the PS5 version of “Returnal” marks the third anniversary tomorrow, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, the unveiling of a successor seems rather unrealistic. If Housemarque is indeed working on a “Returnal 2”, Sony Interactive Entertainment is more likely to present the title at an event like the PS5 Games Showcase.

This one finds unconfirmed reports According to this, it will take place in May.

A new headquarters and ambitious plans

In October 2023, Housemarque announced its move to a new headquarters, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. The new office is located in Helsinki, Finland and, according to Housemarque, “will be a beacon of innovation and creativity in the northernmost capital.”

At the same time, the studio formulated ambitious plans in the announcement of the new headquarters. Housemarque's goal is nothing less than to positively influence the video game industry with innovative concepts.

“With features such as state-of-the-art meeting rooms, proper audio studios, testing areas and wellness areas, we are creating an environment that combines Nordic sensibility with creativity and aims to attract the world's best game developers,” they continued.

If Housemarque provides clarity regarding the tweet published today, we will of course update you immediately.
