There is hardly a PS3 game that I have played longer than Top Spin 4. In my Test for the current games I called 2K Games' tennis simulation the “best tennis game of all time.” And I didn't think I would be right for long, because after Top Spin 4 there wasn't a tennis game that could hold a candle to the top dog. To make matters worse, the felt ball epic is one of the few PS3 games that doesn't run on the PS4, let alone the PS5. The Playstation 3 has long been sold, so as a tennis fan I'm starved to the bone. But the waiting time is finally over, because Top Spin 2K25 (release April 26, 2024) will soon be released for PS5, PS4 and Xbox consoles!

What should Top Spin 2K25 offer?
I celebrated Top Spin 4 primarily because of the unbeatably good gameplay and the great atmosphere. Top spin tennis just felt real. It wasn't a felt-ball bashing like Virtua Tennis, but a simulation that relied more on clever strategy than quick reaction. Although you couldn't win a match without good timing (very good online).

The gameplay videos I've seen so far from Top Spin 2K25 (buy now €74.99 ) I have seen indicate that the new developer Hangar 13 is aware of the strengths of its predecessor, which absolutely need to be preserved. Outplaying your opponent with your wits and timing seems to be the key to success again, although according to the developers, the rallies should be kept a little shorter than in the predecessor. An extensive training mode under the guidance of John McEnroe is intended to bring you closer to the basics and finer points of the game.

While the Wimbledon tournament was still missing from Top Spin 4, all Grand Slam tournaments are now included. There are also numerous other ATP venues such as Indian Wells, Hard Rock Stadium (Miami) or Pala Alpitour (Turin). Of course, the players are more important than the locations. Over 24 professionals are taking part, with current stars such as Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek and Frances Tiafeo also being joined by legends such as Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams.
It's a shame from a German perspective: From the looks of it, Steffi Graf is the only German tennis star in Top Spin 2K25. Alexander Zverev is just as in vain as Boris Becker, who was still one of the playable legends in Top Spin 4.
When it comes to game modes, there is of course a single player career as well as the possibility of online matches – crossplay included. As befits a 2K Games game, a MyCareer mode should not be missing, in which you create a player according to your imagination, earn skill points in offline and online matches and thus improve the warrior's skills.
I haven't been able to play Top Spin 2K25 myself yet, but I've been able to watch some gameplay videos. Clearly, I'm not impressed with the graphics. The animations are fine – professionals like Roger Federer were even hired for motion capture – but the players' faces don't look that great. Steffi Graf, for example, is barely recognizable. The developers promise 60 fps on all consoles.
