Cyberpunk fans had to be strong for a long time: As fun as the Pen&Paper Cyberpunk Red is, it hasn't been so easy to experience Night City as we know it from Cyberpunk 2077. The setting is set decades earlier. But the wait will soon be over!

As publisher Talsorian Games has now announced, one is possible new expansion in print based on the Netflix series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. And it takes place in the year 2076, almost exactly in V's era!

We'll explain to you what's inside and, on top of that, give you a personal assessment from our video editor and cyberpunk expert Paul. Would you like a quick introduction? Please:

What is the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit?

The extension offers Rule sets, ready-made characters, setting descriptions and a new mission, which officially continues the story of the animated series. Cyberpunk inventor Mike Pondsmith, Talsorian Games and CD Projekt Red worked together on the content. Coming soon in the kit:

  • Guide with lore for the Edgerunners setting.
  • Rulebook with all the nice things that exist in the 2070s: smart weapons, quickhacks and so on
  • Mission “The Jacket”
  • Seven pre-made Edgerunners characters
  • New lore and more information about the series characters Lucy, Rebecca, David and Co.
  • New dice, maps, tokens and so on

According to Talsorian Games, the kit costs $35, so probably around 35 euros. You can order it shortly Talsorian Games yourself or about DriveThruRPGthe Release is planned for mid to late June 2024 (physical and digital version). Digital modules for Roll20 will also follow soon.

On Reddit, one of the designers answered many fan questions, such as whether you can play with just the Edgerunners kit without previous rules (yes, you can). And that this module will not be everything that will appear in the 2070s. If you're looking for more information, you should take a look there:

This is what our expert says about the announcement

Paul Aeils: Cyberpunk Red has really grown on me since its release in 2020 and, alongside Dungeons & Dragons, is my go-to role-playing game, especially as a game master. This is particularly due to the detailed world, the colorful characters and of course the neon shine of Night City. I'm really happy that so many new people got to know and love the world through Cyberpunk 2077 and the Edgerunners anime.

Until now, it's always been a bit difficult to explain to fans of the 2070s the era of the 2040s in which Cyberpunk Red takes place. There are no quickhacks here, no Mantis blades and Sandevistan is still in its infancy. I'm all the happier that, as a game master, I can now pick up these fans and introduce them to the world of pen & paper role-playing games!

I'm especially looking forward to the new toys! I'm excited to see how the power, tech and smart weapons work and especially how the quickhacks are translated into pen & paper rules. Plus a new mission that ties into the end of the anime, pre-made characters for newcomers (all of which were designed by Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi) and most importantly: new dice! I already know what kind of cyberpunk adventure I'll be leading next!

Edgerunners had already given Cyberpunk 2077 a decent boost, hopefully the same will happen with Cyberpunk Red.

How many active Cyberpunk Red players do we have in our community? Feel free to have your say, we can't just leave the field to the big fantasy role-playing games, Chooms! There is currently at least one active group in the GameStar editorial team, most of whom came up with it after Cyberpunk 2077.
