Yoshida pushed for a higher budget and was surprised

As part of the video series called “The Games That Made Us”, producer Naoki Yoshida took another look at the work on “Final Fantasy 16”. As Yoshida explained, Square Enix's executives particularly impressed him when he asked for a larger budget.

After “Final Fantasy 13” and “Final Fantasy 15” fell short of expectations, the legendary role-playing game series finally got back on track with “Final Fantasy 16”.

On Metacritic After almost 150 reviews, an average rating of 87 points awaits. The community was also enthusiastic. A look at this makes this clear the PlayStation Store, where the user rating is 4.52 out of five possible stars. A large part of the success was played by producer Naoki Yoshida, who decided to break new ground in various areas such as the combat system.

In Square Enix's video series called “The Games That Made Us,” Yoshida looked back at the development of “Final Fantasy 16.” The president highlighted a small anecdote that came about at the beginning of development. This revolved around the budget of the role-playing game.

Producer talks about ups and downs

“Of course, we had a lot of ups and downs while developing the game,” said Yoshida. “But I think we did a good job of staying true to our course. This may sound strange coming from my position. But I really admire the team. I’m proud of them for pulling it off and creating the game to its full potential.”

Regarding the budget that “Final Fantasy 16” was based on, Yoshida added that he approached Square Enix with a desire for a higher budget. To his surprise, this was approved by the publisher.

“I can’t say how much it was. However, I really have to give them credit for allowing us to spend so much. So I feel a little pressure in terms of paying it back, but it was really incredible,” Yoshida continued.

Update 1.32 fixes the critical bug in New Game Plus

Square Enix released the next update for “Final Fantasy 16” this week under version 1.32. As announced in advance of release, the patch fixes a critical bug in the RPG's New Game Plus mode. In the worst case scenario, this could block your progress.



It's all about the details a bug, which could occur if you skipped the prologue in New Game Plus mode. This meant that your team members were no longer visible, which meant that you could no longer complete the “Random Encounter” quest.

The developers at Square Enix also addressed a bug that could cause the game to crash in isolated cases.

“Final Fantasy 16” was released for the PS5 in June 2023. The developers are currently working on an implementation for the PC, which will follow at an unspecified date.
