WSL 2.3.11 (Windows Subsystem for Linux) with new kernel modules and much more

A new update to version 2.3.11 with many changes is available for the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). The kernel has been updated to version 6.6.36.3 and hundreds of new kernel modules have been added. WSLg (Windows Subsystem for Linux GUI) has also been updated to version 1.0.63.

This means that the kernel upgrade to 6.6 LTS has now been completed. But that is not all. The command wsl --manage --move has been implemented and the WSL Settings feature has been added. The bridged network mode is currently not selectable via the GUI. The other changes are:

  • Microsoft.DXCore.Linux updated to version 10.0.26100.1-240331-1435.ge-release
  • Expanding the Linux ephemeral port range
  • Updates mirrored mode loopback routing to support connections between Windows host and Linux Docker/Podman containers
  • Improved error message when calling wsl.exe --exec
  • Moves the inclusion of kernel modules to an earlier point in the boot process and adjusts the behavior when including modules
  • Fixed issue with incorrect localization files for msrdc.exe
  • Disables virtio9p while debugging a problem
  • Improved socket protocol to detect errors early
  • Adds a bug tracking statement for all cases where opening wslconfig fails
  • The installation of the distribution is now changed to attempt a memory installation and then fall back to a direct download

WSL 2.3.11 is currently a pre-release. If you want to stay with the stable version, you can continue to use version 2.2.4
