What is Wordle’s recipe for success?
Wordle is a very simple letter game where you guess which word you are looking for. Researchers have found that it’s still pretty tricky. The complexity lies in always finding the guaranteed best way to get the right word out quickly. It’s so difficult that it’s called “NP-hard,” which in technical terms means that the computer has to try a lot to do it. (Source: Cornell University)
Scientists from MIT have shown that clever methods such as “thinking algorithms” help to choose particularly clever starting words that provide many clues at once (source: WITH). With these tricks, the computer can usually guess the word in less than four tries. In short: Wordle looks simple, but it’s full of clever math and computer tricks that keep it fun and exciting.
