WinGet gets experimental functions from 1.9 in the final version

The Windows Package Manager (WinGet) has so far been tested as a preview with the new but experimental functions. However, these new functions were disabled in the stable (latest) version. Microsoft wants to change that with WinGet 1.9.

With the final version 1.9, which will be released in October, these experimental functions can also be tried out in the final version. A preview version is then no longer absolutely necessary. “However, this does not mean that WinGet's experimental features are enabled by default. Some features are still in the development or testing phase. In this case, you must choose to activate it. This ensures that you can choose which features to use and which to avoid, depending on your preferences and needs.”

Over winget settings The experimental functions in the stable can then be changed to “true” in order to use them. Here is a list of the various experimental functions.

This can also be regulated via the group policies for the desktop app installer under “Enable additional sources for the app installer”.

You can find a detailed explanation of this in Microsoft blog post himself.

“WinGet version 1.9 will fundamentally change the way you access and use experimental features in WinGet. Our goal is to simplify the WinGet installation and upgrade process and give you more control and flexibility over the features you want to use. WinGet users can enable and disable experimental features in WinGet via the settings file, while IT professionals can lock the use of experimental features in WinGet via the GPO.”
