Yesterday the patch day and beta and today it continues with the insiders in the Canary channel. And so that we are back in the rhythm of five, Microsoft is making the Windows 11 25951.1000, more precisely the 10.0.25951.1000 rs_prerelease, available for download. The new Insider was compiled on September 8th, 2023.
At the moment only minor corrections are being made. Also with the note that there will definitely be no release notes for a new insider.
Changes and corrections in Windows 11 25951
- Starting with this build (Build 25951), the SMB client now supports blocking NTLM for outbound remote connections. This changes the previous behavior where Windows SPNEGO negotiated Kerberos, NTLM, and other mechanisms with the target server to decide on a supported security package. NTLM in this case refers to all versions of the LAN Manager security package: LM, NTLM and NTLMv2. With this new option, an administrator can intentionally prevent Windows from offering NTLM over SMB. An attacker who tricks a user or application into sending NTLM challenge responses to a malicious server will no longer receive NTLM data and will be unable to force, crack, or share a password because it is never sent over the network. This provides a new level of protection for businesses without having to completely disable NTLM usage in the operating system. You can configure this option using Group Policy and PowerShell. You can also block the use of NTLM in SMB connections using NET USE and PowerShell if necessary.
- Starting with this build (Build 25951), the SMB server now supports controlling the SMB 2 and 3 dialects it negotiates. This changes previous behavior where Windows SMB always negotiated the most appropriate server dialect from SMB 2.0.2 to 3.1.1 clients. Starting with Windows 10, support was added for controlling SMB client dialects, but not server dialects. With this new option, an administrator can exclude older SMB protocols from use in the organization, preventing older, less secure, and less powerful Windows devices and third-party providers from connecting.
- Lock screen We’ve adjusted the network flyout on the lock screen to more closely match the network flyout UI in Quick Settings on the taskbar.
Known problems:
- Some popular games may not work correctly on the latest Insider Preview builds in the Canary Channel. Please make sure to provide feedback in the Feedback Hub about any issues you experience while playing games with these builds.
