Windows 10 / 11 / Server: Edge updates can show the Copilot app under Installed Apps

For a few days now there has been a report making the rounds that Copilot has also appeared as an installed app on server versions. This probably made some people wonder what the copilot was doing on the server. Microsoft announced this as a bug last night.

An Edge Update 123.0.2420.65 and following incorrectly installed a new package (MSIX) named “Microsoft Chat Provider for Copilot in Windows” on Windows devices.

“This may cause the Microsoft Copilot app to appear under Installed Apps in the Settings menu.
It is important to note that the Microsoft Chat Provider for Copilot in Windows does not run any code or process and does not collect, analyze, or transmit device or environmental data in any way.
This package is intended to prepare some Windows devices for future activation of Windows Copilot and is not intended for all devices. Although the component installed as part of this issue may cause the Microsoft Copilot application to appear as part of the installed applications, this component does not fully install or activate Microsoft Copilot.”

Microsoft is currently working on a solution and will correct this with an upcoming update for Microsoft Edge. This then removes the “Copilot in Windows” component on the devices, like most server versions.
