Ridley Scott's Gladiator 2 made a solid but by no means underwhelming debut, grossing $55 million (in the US) on its opening weekend. Industry analyst Scott Mendelson predicts that the film could gross less than $450 million worldwide – an amount that, given the Production budgets of $250 million could be problematic for those in charge at Paramount. This means not only the economic success of Gladiator 2 on the brink, but also the question in the room as to whether a third part of the series will even be realized.
High expectations and mixed reactions
With the approved budget of $250 million, Paramount had obviously hoped that the film would perform significantly better at the box office. Ridley Scott himself emphasized that the production was completed even under budget, but the large sum seems like a risk given the mediocre word of mouth.
Also on Rotten Tomatoes Critics and viewers disagree: While the impressive images are praised, the film does not seem to meet all expectations in terms of content.
The production of gladiator (buy now )2 was expensive – not only because of the elaborate effects and costumes, but also because of the international shooting and top-class actors. If the film actually doesn't make a profit from box office revenue, it will likely rely on streaming and rental sales to stay in the black. But here too it remains unclear whether this income will be enough to consider the project a success.
