The first FPS goes back further than you think
There's no shortage of first-person shooters on the market. Right now, it's the saga falloutand especially Fallout 4which are back in fashion thanks to the series produced by Amazon Prime Video. But FPS franchises are numerous, and go back much further than we might think. Many consider Doom as being the precursor of the genre, and this is not totally false since many games of the same type were based on the engine proposed by the title of idSoftware.
But before Doomthere was certainly Wolfenstein 3Dwhich came out more than a year ago, but above all Maze War, a student project from the 70s that is the truly first first-person shooter. Then there was Battlezonean arcade game developed by Atari in the 80s, and even another title of idSoftware. Titled Hovertank3Dthis shooting game released in 1991 was produced by the same developers as Doomto know John Romero And John Carmack. Since then, hundreds of games of the genre have been created, giving rise to licenses like Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Haloor Titanfall. It is the latter that interests us today…
A shooter as unique as it is dynamic
Titanfall was born from the discord between Activision and the founders of the studio Infinity Wardwho got around the problem by creating Respawn EntertainmentThen Titanfall. A good idea in the end, since the game won more than 6 awards to E3 Critics Awards, including “Best Original Game” and “Best Action Game”. In Titanfallyou play either a member of BMIor a member of the Militia in clashes pitting one faction against another. In addition to playing a pilot, you can control mechas called Titans which are deployed on the field by air, hence the name of the game. The game of Respawn has long been complimented on its mechanics and the sense of dynamism brought by the alternation between the pilot and the Titan.
Noted 17/20 on our site, its sequel certainly succeeded in convincing the video game press, but it missed the boat in terms of sales, undoubtedly because of its release window in October 2016 which pitted it against Battlefield 1 And Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Despite that, Titanfall 2 remains an excellent first-person shooter, which was designated by GamesRadar as the game of the year 2016, and by Polygon as one of the best FPS games of the decade. If you haven't tried it yet, know that it's currently on sale on Steamand this is not the least… It is a reduction of no less than 84%, for a total of €4.79 instead of €29.99 ! A deal not to be missed, and it's sure Titanfall 2 Steam page let it happen.
