Filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen are two dedicated headbangers from Ontario. One day they decided to make a documentary film about heavy metal and via handwritten letters asked their favorite artists if they wanted to be in the film.
Artists such as Rob Zombie, Dee Snider, Alice Cooper and a number of other rock legends took part and the result was the film Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey. The film quickly became a hit and introduced metal culture to a global audience. In conjunction with the film, they also created the production company Banger Films, which has recently developed into a music media empire that has ventured into new genres such as hip-hop and K-pop.
The folks at VICE caught up with Sam and Scot to talk about Banger Films as well as some of their stories, like being stranded on the Great Wall of China.
