According to Circana, the US market has shown growth for the fourth consecutive month, increasing four percent in March 2024 compared to the same period last year. The sales generated last month were $4.89 billion. At $4.25 billion, the lion's share went to the content sector – an increase of nine percent.

The content in the analyzes includes games sold physically and digitally, subscriptions such as PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass, in-game currency or DLCs or expansions.

Mobile market fuels growth

Even though various well-known titles were released for PC and consoles last month, according to Circana, it was the mobile market that accounted for 89 percent of the annual growth. This in turn was dominated by the titles “Monopoly Go”, “Royal Match”, “Roblox” and “Candy Crush”.

On consoles, revenue generated from content increased by three percent. The PC market, on the other hand, showed growth of two percent. The most successful game released in March 2024 was “Dragon's Dogma 2”, which significantly exceeded analysts' expectations. According to Circana, the numbers for “Dragon's Dogma 2” in the launch month were eleven times higher than those of the first part in 2012.

Despite the fact that the surprise hit had to vacate the top spot in the software charts, “Helldivers 2” continues to sell at a high level in the USA. After just two months of sales, the co-op shooter has already recorded the seventh-highest US dollar sales of all games published by Sony in the USA.

It is also noticeable that in March 2024 all well-known new releases made it into the top 10. These include titles like “Rise of the Ronin”, “WWE 2K24” or “MLB: The Show 24”, where the digital numbers on the Switch and Xbox consoles were not taken into account.

Console sales collapsed in March 2024

The market for console hardware did not develop quite as well. Compared to March 2023, the sales generated for all consoles fell by at least 30 percent. The PS5 emerged as the winner again last month, securing first place in the hardware charts in terms of both units sold and revenue generated.

While the Switch took second place in terms of the number of units sold, the Xbox Series X/S took second place in terms of generated sales.

According to Circana, the market for accessories also developed positively. Headsets and headphones were primarily responsible for growth here. The best-selling accessory in March 2024 comes from Sony: the high-end controller DualSense Edge.

Here is an overview of the 20 best-selling games last month.
