Upcoming Console PS5 Poised to Break Records

As part of the current annual report, Sony announced current sales figures for the PS5. Certainly also boosted by the launch of the PS5 Slim, Sony's console celebrated another successful quarter.

During tonight, the Japanese electronics giant Sony presented its annual report for the third quarter ended December 31, 2023.

As can be seen from the business figures, the PS5 had another successful quarter between October 1st and December 31st, 2023. According to Sony, the PS5 sold 8.2 million times in the past quarter, 1.1 million times more than in the second quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year (July 1 – September 30, 2023).

A development in which the launch of the PS5 Slim at the end of last year certainly played a part. Sony also stated that 16.4 million PS5 consoles have been sold to men and women in the current 2023/2024 fiscal year.

Since its official market launch in November 2020, the PS5 has sold an impressive 54.8 million times.

Sony is expecting a record year for the PS5

Sony is also expecting high numbers in the fourth quarter and would like to sell 8.6 million PS5 consoles in the period between January 1st and March 31st, 2024. If the company achieves this goal, Sony would set a new internal record with 25 million PS5 consoles shipped in the 2023/2024 fiscal year.

Regarding software, the company added that 89.7 million PS5 games were sold in the last quarter. The first-party titles from PlayStation Studios accounted for 16.2 million games sold. It is interesting that the proportion of copies sold digitally has recently declined slightly.

According to Sony, 66 percent of all PS5 games were sold digitally in the last quarter. In the first quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year, this value was still 70 percent. In the second quarter it was 67 percent.

When it comes to PlayStation Plus, Sony decided to do so last year no updated subscriber numbers more to name. The last number that Sony gave in the annual report refers to the end of the 2022/2023 financial year on March 31, 2023. Here, the PlayStation Plus service recorded 47.4 million active subscriptions.

The number of monthly active users on the PlayStation Network has developed positively in recent months. This was 123 million users in the third quarter. For comparison: In the first quarter of the current financial year there were still 108 million monthly active users.
