After more than two decades, a surprising revelation shakes the foundations of a mystery that has captivated gamers around the world. Contrary to the widely held belief that the flakes falling from the sky in Silent Hill represented ash, a much more prosaic explanation sheds light on this enigmatic phenomenon. It is not ash, but rather snow. Konami art director Masahiro Ito clarified this confusion in a tweet dated 2022, where he shares a screenshot from the game, showing that the characters mention being in a time when it's snowing.

The white dots in the game sky are not ashes. “It's snowing”.

Silent Hill, a survival horror title released in 1999, captured the imagination of players with its oppressive atmosphere and supernatural elements. The player plays Harry Mason, who finds himself alone in the eponymous town after an accident, confronted with terrifying creatures in a thick fog. Among the distinctive elements of this gloomy atmosphere are the white dots falling from the sky, long interpreted as ash. Ito's revelation challenges an interpretation widely accepted by fans for decades, offering a new perspective on the game's universe and its immersive storytelling.

A franchise soon to return

As we recall, the Silent Hill franchise continues to expand with two new projects under development. The first is a highly anticipated remake of Silent Hill 2, originally released in 2002, which will modernize the gaming experience while revisiting James' adventures in the eponymous town. Although the release date has not yet been confirmed, we know that the game will be available on PC and PS5.

At the same time, the world of cinema is also preparing a new chapter for Silent Hill fans, with the upcoming release of a film entitled “Return to Silent Hill”. The film will follow the plot of the game released in 2002, featuring protagonist James searching for his beloved in the enigmatic village.
