Game news We have never seen this enemy! 28 years later, Super Mario 64 still has secrets…
Super Mario 64 still hides many secrets, which prove that this game has everything to be cult!
More than cult
Nearly 25 years after its release, Super Mario 64 is still recognized today as a true ambassador of the plumber. The game has a cult following and built the foundation for almost all of Nintendo's future Mario titles. Thousands of players were able to explore it for hours. However, that doesn't stop fans from diving back into it from time to time, to achieve some challenges. For example, a few weeks ago, streamer Marbler achieved the impossible by completing Super Mario 64 without ever using the A button once. It took him almost 86 hours. However, what makes the title famous are also its secrets and its small details still hidden. Like this enemy who had disappeared, but who had been under our noses all along.
A hidden enemy
It's the Internet user Supper Mario Broth who has just unearthed this little hidden detail of Super Mario 64. In the development files of the title, which contains the ideas put in place for the software, a new enemy has just been discovered. It's a little cactus with eyes, which as you might expect, isn't in the final version. Given its environment, everything suggests that it could have been encountered in the dry desert. However, there are indications that this character has not been 100% abandoned. since its shape recalls another enemy of the famous plumber. Only this time, it can be encountered in a completely different environment: snow.
Development files for Super Mario 64 contain an early model of the Mr. Blizzard snowman enemy that, due to missing color data, appears with yellowish green gradients. While completely unintended, this makes it appear cactus-themed, accidentally creating a plausible enemy design. pic.twitter.com/5VxJXFNMOj

And yes, you will surely have noticed that Blizzard looks like a cactus, when we compare the two characters: their shapes, their eyes and even their arm with a glove. Everything suggests that the 3D model was recycled, so as not to spoil it. Some people wonder, however, why the eyes do not appear in the images. As Super Mario Broth recalls: “As SM64 mainly uses textures for facial features and details while colors are managed with another system, this results in many models lacking eyes.” With this particularity in mind, we better understand how the idea of creating Blizzard came to the developers' minds. Without eyes and colorlessthe model just looks like two completely white superimposed spheres: a snowman.
