Ubisoft: Sales figures for Prince of Persia & Avatar are said to be disappointing

According to well-known insider Tom Henderson, Ubisoft not only posted sales figures for “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” and “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” that were below internal expectations. Furthermore, according to Henderson, we can assume that the long-term project “Skull and Bones” will probably never recoup the development costs.

In a current report, Insider Gaming deals in detail with the current development of the publisher Ubisoft. Among other things, it was about the sales figures of the last titles.

As Insider Gaming reports, both the shooter “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora,” released in December, and the action platformer “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown,” are expected to sell below internal expectations. Regarding the new “Avatar” adventure, Insider Gaming explains that it has had 1.9 million players since its release.

It goes on to say that the shooter has so far generated around $133 million in sales. For comparison: Ubisoft Massive's last projects “The Division” (2016) and “The Division 2” (2019) grossed $330 and $264 million respectively in the first week.

According to Insider Gaming, the disappointing performance of “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” is likely due to the various postponements. These ensured that the shooter benefited less than planned from the box office success of “Avatar: The Way of Water”.

Skulls and Bones a guaranteed losing proposition?

Another title that failed to live up to expectations is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. The action platformer was one of the first surprise hits of 2024 in terms of gameplay and ratings. However, according to Insider Gaming, the sales figures are within a manageable range.

Accordingly, just 300,000 users accessed “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown”. The title generated sales of around $15 million. Given the convincing reviews and the fact that the platformer was released for the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Switch, a disappointing performance.

According to Insider Gaming, the pirate adventure “Skull and Bones”, which has been postponed repeatedly in the past, is also likely to cause headaches for those responsible at Ubisoft. According to Tom Henderson's sources, the costs for development and production alone should amount to 200 million US dollars.

“It is estimated that the game cost approximately $200 million to produce. A figure that sources say is unlikely to be returned. The delays were largely due to power-hungry managers trying to advance their careers,” Insider Gaming added.

“The constant changes in vision created a bad atmosphere where some developers were confused and didn’t know what to do on a day-to-day basis.”

Even though Tom Henderson and Insider Gaming are usually reliable sources, we must point out that Ubisoft did not comment on or confirm the numbers mentioned.
